Senator Wicker Visits Memorial Hospital at Gulfport

GULFPORT, MS – On Thursday, October 16, U.S. Senator and Mrs. Roger Wicker met with Memorial Hospital administration to tour the build-out and renovation of space designated to establish a new medical oncology clinic.

The Senate Appropriations Committee approved the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education spending bill, legislation that included $500,000 for Memorial Hospital, funding secured by Sen. Roger Wicker. These funds are designated to assist with the renovation of space within the Memorial Medical Office Building.

“With the capacity to treat more than 900 cancer patients in its first year of operation, this new clinic will provide urgently-needed services while helping Memorial Hospital remain one of the Gulf Coast’s premier cancer centers,” said U. S. Senator Roger Wicker.

The Medical Oncology Clinic will provide needed chemotherapy services to all citizens of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and will reduce the travel burdens currently being experienced by residents for certain types of cancer. Once renovations are complete, chemotherapy and radiation therapy will both be conveniently located on the first floor of the Memorial Medical Office Building. Sen. and Mrs. Wicker, Dr. Stephanie Fussell, Memorial Medical Oncologist, and Gary Marchand, Memorial President and CEO toured the space designated for the clinic. "We’re pleased to be able to expand our cancer services to improve access to cancer treatments for the residents of our community,” Marchand said.

Sen. and Mrs. Wicker also visited the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and met with Dr. Kenneth Schroeter, Neonatologist. Memorial has the only civilian NICU on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
