Qatar Hope Fund

On Friday, Sept. 8, at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, Administration from Memorial Hospital at Gulfport graciously accepted $10 million from the State of Qatar to provide medical care not covered by insurance or other funding for victims of Katrina.

When Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the United States in August 2005, America’s friends around the world felt its devastating impact.  The State of Qatar, in the Arabian Gulf, responded to the disaster with an unprecedented, direct donation of $100 million to assist Katrina victims by supporting critical projects not receiving help from other sources.  The Qatar Katrina Fund was announced in September, 2005, by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar.  The first group of gift recipients was announced in May, 2006 by His Excellency Nassir Al-Khalifa, Qatar’s Ambassador to the United States.  Ambassador Al Khalifa announced the second, final group of grantees on Friday.  In addition to Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, the other grantees include:

  • Boys and Girls Clubs Community Center: rebuild the Boys and Girls Club Community Center in Pass Christian, MS.
  • Coastal Family Health Center’s “Qatar Katrina Health Care Assistance Fund”: staff a mobile health care van and pay for medical care not covered by insurance or other funding for victims of Katrina.
  • Covenant House’s “Qatar’s Lafitte Corridor Community Revival”: repair homes to habitable standards for low-income Katrina victims in the Treme/LaFitte Corridor.
  • Unity Housing for Disabled:  repair to housing units for homeless and special needs victims of Katrina.
  • Tulane University Community Health Center: expansion and continued operation of the Tulane Community Health Center at Covenant House and the addition of a mobile medical unit.
  • NHP Foundation: provide rental assistance for low and moderate income victims of Katrina.
